10K vs. 14K: a guide to gold purity

Gold purity is crucial for determining the value, appearance and durability of a piece of jewellery. The two most common standards are 10-karat (10K) and 14-karat (14K) gold. Pure gold is a soft, malleable metal, so it’s often mixed with other metal alloys to make it stronger. The karat number reflects the proportion of pure gold in the alloy, with the remaining percentage composed of other metals, such as copper, nickel, silver or zinc.

Understanding the differences between 10K and 14K gold is essential to make an informed decision when purchasing gold jewellery. Here’s a helpful guide.

The difference between 10K and 14K gold

Ten-karat gold is made of 41.7 per cent pure gold and 58.3 per cent alloy. This makes it quite durable and less prone to scratches and dents than 14K gold. Ten-karat gold is a good choice for jewellery pieces worn on an everyday basis, such as engagement rings and bracelets. Moreover, because of the lower gold content, it’s also extremely affordable. However, it’s often duller in colour and has less lustre than higher-karat gold items.

Fourteen-karat gold is made of 58.3 per cent pure gold and 41.7 per cent alloy metals. This makes it slightly more malleable than 10K gold. However, it still offers a great balance between durability and gold content. Fourteen-karat gold has a warmer colour and more pronounced shine than 10K gold. This makes it a popular choice for a wide range of jewellery, from rings and necklaces to earrings.

How to decide on the gold purity

When deciding between 10K and 14K gold, you must consider several factors, such as your budget and how often the item will be worn. For everyday jewellery pieces, 10K gold may be the better choice, as it has added durability. If you’re looking for a good balance between gold content and durability, 14K gold offers a desirable option.

It’s also important to note that many people are allergic to nickel, which is commonly added to gold as an alloy metal. As 10K gold contains more of these alloy metals than 14K gold, it’s more likely to trigger skin allergies.
